ADVOCACY NOTE - ENERGY

The energy transition is a strategic opportunity for São Tomé and Príncipe to accelerate its economic development, reduce social inequalities, and strengthen climate resilience. The new Advocacy Note on the Energy Sector presents a clear roadmap to transform the country’s energy sector, with a focus on justice, inclusion, and sustainability.
With over 95% of electricity generated from fossil fuels, the country faces high energy costs and serious environmental challenges. This note proposes concrete solutions to modernize infrastructure, diversify the energy mix using renewable sources such as solar and hydropower, and ensure that all communities, including the most remote, have access to reliable and affordable energy.
The document also highlights ongoing projects, the role of the United Nations in providing technical and institutional support, and offers recommendations to strengthen sector governance, promote public-private partnerships, encourage technological innovation, and mobilize sustainable investments.
The energy transition is more than a necessity, it is a driving force for the future of São Tomé and Príncipe.
